Today we’re going to create a vector graffiti logo and apply the bitmap texture from the free texture packs, available to customers Pro Texture Packs with the help of the Texturino. Other Astute Graphics’ tools will help us to make the process of creating an artwork fast, convenient, and efficient.
Begin our tutorial with a rough pencil sketch of AG (Astute Graphics) logo. Then scan it.
Create a new Illustrator document (Cmd / Ctrl + N), in the open dialog box, set the required sizes of an artboard, and choose RGB color mode.
Now place a sketch into the current document (File > Place …) and will lock it in the Layers panel.
Proceed to the creation of vector logo based on the sketch. For these purposes, you can use the Pen Tool (P), but, in my opinion, it is more convenient and faster to recreate the shape of the letters with the help of InkScribe. Let’s see how it’s done. Click on InkScribe in the Tools panel and open the tool panel (Window > InkScribe > InkScribe panel).
Click on Draw a straight segment and Corner point buttons in the InkScribe panel.
The shape of the sketch letters is far from perfection, so I created several guides that will help you fix it in the process of drawing.
Select the stroke of any color, and disable the color fill in the Tools panel. With the help of InkScribe create a path consisting of only straight-line segments, based on the sketch of the letter A.
One of the advantages of InkScribe is that the tool has functions similar to the functions of the Direct Selection Tool. That means that you can edit the created points, segments and handles, without using other tools and shortcuts. Grab one of the straight-line segments and moving its side create a shape required by the sketch.
Work the same way with other segments. This is a very fast and easy process.
Similarly, creating a shape of the letter G.
Create the remaining elements of the letters with the help of the rectangles.
Select all the paths, then press the Unite button in the Pathfinder panel.
Round the corners of some letters. For this purpose, you can use the Corner Widgets (View > Show Corner Widget), if you are a Adobe Illustrator CC user. If you are working with earlier releases, you won’t be able to solve this problem without the Dynamic Corners Tool in the VectorScribe plug-in.
Disable the stroke, then fill the letters with a vertical linear gradient, which contains a yellow color and two shades of orange.
Group up the letters (Cmd / Ctrl + G), copy the group and paste it back (Cmd / Ctrl + C, Cmd / Ctrl + B). Keeping the lower group selected, go to Object > Path > Offset path …. Set the Offset value (in my case it is 10px).
Color objects in the lower group with dark gray color.
Copy the dark gray group and paste it back. This copy needs to displace downward and to the right, as shown below.
Select both of the dark gray groups, then go to Object > Blend > Make, then go to Object > Blend > Blend Options … and set the number of steps.
With the help of the Pen Tool (P), create two triangular shapes of the dark gray color as it is shown in the picture below.
Now create four circles using the Ellipse Tool with a fill of the same color.
Create a gray rectangle corresponding to an artboard, which will serve as a temporary background.
Copy the blend object and paste it back. Keeping the copy selected, go to Object > Blend > Expand.
Now press the Unite button in the Pathfinder panel.
Go to Object > Path > Offset path …. Set the Offset value.
Fill the bottom object with white color.
Below all the logo objects we will place white circles similar to what is show in the picture below.
Using the Pencil Tool (N) create a few drops of the dripping paint.
Create glares on the left side of the letter. Draw a path with a white stroke and apply it to the Width Profile 1 in the Stroke panel. Create similar objects in other locations. Group up all the elements of the graffiti logo.
Place graffiti on a brick wall. Here we will use the bitmap brick texture from Pro Texture Packs and Texturino. If you are a Texturino customer, then sign-in into your Astute Graphics account and click on the new Pro Texture Pack link. The textures provided are high resolution and quality, many seamlessly repeatable and ready for importing into your Texturino texture library. Open the Texturino panel (Window > Texturino > Texture panel). Click on the Import new textures button in the panel and add a Brick wall detail texture. By the way, you can import multiple textures simultaneously.
We will also need a fine grade stone texture from Pro Texture Packs.
Select the gray rectangle and then click on Add a new texture button in the Texture panel. Texture is added and annotation system has appeared.
Double-click on the Scale control, and set 15% in the opened dialog box.
The chosen texture is seamless, so we can apply any scale to it.
Although we are using a black and white texture, we can give any shade to it. Apply to the textured rectangle a vertical linear gradient, which consists of two shades of blue color. Multiply blending mode is selected by default in the annotation system. Thanks to this the texture is colored in gradient colors.
Apply color correction with the help of the Phantasm. Keeping the texture selected, go to Effect > Phantasm > Levels … and in the dialog box, set the Input Levels as shown below.
Now go to Effect > Phantasm > Curves …, add a point to the chart and move it slightly up.
Now we need to make sure that the brick texture appears on the graffiti. Apply the Overlay blending mode to the group with vector objects in the Transparency panel.
Yes, the texture on the letters appeared, but the seams between the bricks look as if there is no color in them. Therefore we continue our experiments. Copy graffiti logo and paste it in front (Cmd / Ctrl + C, Cmd / Ctrl + F), apply the Darken blending mode to the upper group.
Select the lower group and go to Effect > Phantasm > Curves …, add the point to the chart and move it a little bit down.
Now graffiti looks more natural.
To add more realism apply another texture to the upper group. Select it, choose fine grade stone texture in the Texture panel, and click Add a new texture button.
Double-click on the Scale control in the annotation system, and set 50% in the open dialog box, apply the Overlay blending mode to the texture. In this way we created the spray drops on the graffiti.
And then the Graffiti logo on the brick wall is ready.
