Vector Halftones, Live Colour Control + Filters

Vector halftones | Duotone | Color adjustments | Apply as live Effect or Filter | Photoshop compatible settings | Pre-press adjustments

Made up of three key components, Phantasm makes light work of much sought-after vector halftones, duotones and tricky color adjustments. Easily adjust vector artwork, text, effects and embedded images with curves and other essential controls (just like Photoshop!) directly in Illustrator. With user defined adjustments to ensure a fast workflow and maximum creativity.

Vector Halftones

Quickly create a 100% scalable halftone effect based on any underlying artwork. Includes the user defined presets: monochrome/CMYK/sampled colors, grid angle, dpi, undercoat and origin. As well as user defined ‘dot’ presets of: circular/square/line/text/characters/symbol, angle, blend and dot gain curves. Can be applied to layer prior to drawing. Halftones are particularly useful for posters through to T-shirt design and security printing.

Color Adjustments

Essential adjustments like you would find in Photoshop including the following: brightness/contrast, curves, desaturate, exposure, hue/saturation, invert, levels, shift to color, temperature/tint. Curves interface (just like Photoshop!). Works on vectors, text and embedded images. Live preview. Load and export settings with Photoshop.

Live Effects or Filters

All Phantasm adjustments can be applied as either live Effects or as Filters to suit your workflow. Applying adjustments as a live Effect will allow you to toggle the Effect on/off via the Appearance Panel. Can be applied to other live Effects such as drop shadows and textures found in our other plug-ins Stylism and Texturino. Or choose to apply Phantasm adjustments as a Filter to allow you to make permanent adjustments allowing for easy automation, including batch processing through standard Illustrator actions to instantly replicate adjustments. Phantasm live Effect and Filters work for vectors, text and embedded images.

Automate with Actions

Let Phantasm task the strain with repetitive tasks using Adobe Illustrator’s Actions mechanism. Whether creating sets of artistic results (eg. color variations) or ensuring quality with pre-press technical adjustments (eg. remove white overprint), Actions are easy to create and play back.

Phantasm Pre-press Adjustments

Pre-press Adjustments

Control individual channels including transparency (alpha) and spot inks. Adjust the profile of drop shadows and glows for a much more realistic result. Includes pre-press options such as white overprint removal and rich black conversion. Handle flexo drop-offs directly in Illustrator.

    :

I now seem to use this plugin on a daily basis. It does so many things. And all of them are fantastic.
The halftone generator is peerless. I would like the halftone feature to offer “auto mask” and allow me to tick on or off a mask for the object being screened. That would save me an extra step of creating the mask to clean up the edges when needed. The only request in all it can do. Pretty dang cool if you ask me.

      :

Thanks Sam! Yep – auto-generating masks has been on a to-do list for some time. In the meantime, the blog article Constraining a Phantasm vector Halftone was published to help with current work-arounds.

I tried the trial and it seems that Phantasm’s capabilities should be a built in feature of Illustrator. Paying $80 more dollars for features that should be standard seems excessive so I unfortunately can’t justify the purchase :(

    :

You made what Adobe can’t make and what you made is so expensive. paying more than $15 is not reasonable for this plugin.

      :

Sorry you feel that our pricing is higher than you’d anticipate. Taking into account the time-savings immediately possible for any professional creative workflow and the quality of implementation (functionality, UI, full integration, immediate support of all CC releases, etc.) it’s a cost we have tried to keep to a minimum without jeopardising future developments. Please try the 14 day free trial fully in your everyday workflow and see how much time it can save you… and what this financially translates to. Thanks!

Illustrator has added many whimsical, useless features to its software over the past few years that seem marketed toward casual or amateur users, or features that seem useful as ideas but are poor in practice (looking at you, Adobe Libraries). These additions are fully in keeping with Adobe’s desire to become a profitable software giant to its shareholders: Adobe has other things in mind besides improving their products, evidenced by their slow adaptation of features from companies they have cannibalized and emphasizing things like the Symbol Sprayer instead of improving precise object selection. This process is similar to the way in which car companies add minor adjustments (more cupholders, automatically locking doors…) to new models without improving things like driver visibility or handling.

Astute, however, is producing plugins that truly expand the possibilities of Illustrator within the primary software itself, and it is doing so without relying on entirely different types of software (e.g. Rhino / Grasshopper, Photoshop). Phantasm is the singlemost important of these plugins. It is essential for those who are working heavily with color adjustments in Illustrator and it is, truly, peerless for halftones. Universal color adjustments which are otherwise tedious through native Illustrator methods become familiar and intuitive with Phantasm. This is a very useful tool for illustrators. For general graphic design the software makes playing with image manipulation a lot of fun. The number of controls can seem intimidating at first, but is increasingly rewarding with practice over weeks (or months). A 14-day trial simply will not show you everything. It is worth the money.

Bonus: Phantasm halftones can also be applied with great results to vector graphics, even gradient meshes. (This is also true of Stipplism, another essential).

I recently started working with a screen printer to help them achieve faster turn around on designs. This plugin paid for itself before my free trial was even up!
