In the previous tutorial we looked at the process of creating isometric icons of the building with the help of transformation effects and Phantasm for quick coloring of different projections. Today, using action feature we will make the process automatic. After this, creating isometric icons in Adobe Illustrator will only take a few seconds. Accelerate to speeds of space!

Step 1

Create graphic styles, using effects, which we described in the previous tutorial. Let's make an arbitrary object and apply two transformation effects to it (Object > Transform & Distort > Transform …), that correspond to the deformation of the left isometric plane.

Turn off the fill and stroke of the object. These are extra attributes of the style.

Create an Isometric action

On the basis of this object, create a graphic style, name it Left.

Create an Isometric action

Step 2

Apply to our object Brightness / Contrast effect (Effect > Phantasm > Brightness / Contrast …) and reduce the value of Brightness. This effect will allow us, if necessary, to quickly shade objects of the left isometric projection.

Create an Isometric action

Based on the object create a graphic style, and name it Left shadow.

Create an Isometric action

Step 3

Remove all the effects of the selected object in the Appearance panel.

Create an Isometric action

Now apply to the object two transformation effects (Object > Transform & Distort > Transform …), that correspond to the deformation of the right isometric plane.

On the basis of this object, create a graphic style, and name it Right.

Step 4

Apply to our object Brightness / Contrast effect (Effect > Phantasm > Brightness / Contrast …) and reduce the value of Brightness. This effect will allow us to shade objects of the right isometric projection.

Create an Isometric action

Based on the object create a graphic style, name it Right shadow.

Create an Isometric action

Step 5

Remove all the effects of the selected object in the Appearance panel. Now apply to the object two effects of transformation (Object > Transform & Distort > Transform …), that correspond to the deformation of the top isometric plane.

Step 6

We apply our object Brightness / Contrast effect (Effect> Phantasm> Brightness / Contrast …) and increase the value of Brightness. This effect will allow us to quickly lighten all the objects of the top isometric projection.

Create an Isometric action

Based on the object create a graphic style named Top.

Create an Isometric action

Step 7

Now let's create Isometric actions. Open the Action panel (Window > Actions) and create a new set, by pressing the corresponding button in the panel. Name this set, Isometric Actions.

Create an Isometric action

Click on the Create New Action button in the Actions panel and name it Light from Left, then press the Record button. Here we assume that light is distributed from left to right, which means that the right side of the isometric projection must be shaded.

Create an Isometric action

Step 8

In the process of creation action, we will use flat projections of the house from the previous tutorial. Pay attention to the fact that the elements corresponding to one projection should be grouped up together.

Create an Isometric action

In addition, left projection is located at the bottom of the stack in the Layers panel, and then comes the right and top one.

Create an Isometric action

Select the left projection, then press the Left style in Graphic Styles panel, holding the Opt / Alt key (Opt / Alt adds all effects to existing styles).

Create an Isometric action

As you can see, the style has been successfully applied, and the action is recorded to the action.

Create an Isometric action

Step 9

Go to Select > Next Object Above. This will lead to the selection of the group, which corresponds to the right projection. This action will instantly be recorded to the Action.

Create an Isometric action

Apply the Right shadow graphic style to the group, holding Opt / Alt key. Due to the effect of Phantasm Brightness / Contrast all the elements of the right projection were shaded.

Create an Isometric action

Step 10

Go to Select > Next Object Above. This will lead to the selection of the object that corresponds to the top projection.

Create an Isometric action

Apply the Top graphic style to the object, holding Opt / Alt key. Due to the effect Phantasm Brightness / Contrast, this object was lit.

Create an Isometric action

Step 11

Select all the objects (Select > Select All), then go to Object > Expand Appearance. Unfortunately, this action is not automatically recorded to the Action. For recording choose Insert Menu Item in the fly-out menu of the Actions panel.

Create an Isometric action

Proceed to Object > Expand Appearance again.

Create an Isometric action

Finally, go to Select > Deselect. Now click on Stop in the Actions panel.

Create an Isometric action

Check the operation of an Isometric action.

Create an Isometric action

It took less than 2 seconds to create and color three isometric projections from flat design!

Step 12

Do it yourself and create action for the case when the light source is located on the right. This time, left projection will be shaded (Left shadow graphic style)

Create an Isometric action

Save Isometric Actions. To do this, choose Save Actions … in the fly-out menu of the Actions panel. After the work of any of the actions set up we just need to correctly position the projections and draw necessary details. About how it can be conveniently done using ColliderScribe read the first part of the tutorial "Create an isometric icon with transform effects and Phantasm in Illustrator".

Unfortunately, in recent releases of Adobe Illustrator (CS6-CC2014) some parameters may randomly disappear in the downloaded actions after closing the application. If this happens, remove the Isometric Actions in the Actions panel, and then load them again (select Load Actions … in the fly-out menu of the Actions panel).

Now you have a handy tool to create isometrics in Adobe Illustrator in seconds.
